Abstract

This quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design was aimed at studying the effects of the education and counseling program on sexual function in patients who had valvular replacement surgery. The subjects were 54 patients undergoing valvular replacement surgery who came to follow up at the Cardiothoracic Surgery Examination Unit of Siriraj Hospital. Subjects were selected by simple random sampling according to the inclusion criteria. The sample was divided into an experimental group and a control group with 27 subjects assigned to each of them. The experimental group received an educational program with sex counseling using Naylor's transition theory1. Data were collected for 3 months by using a questionnaire about the patient’s demographic data and the sexual function assessment form. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, independent t-test, one-way repeated measure ANOVA, and Fisher's Exact Test.

The results revealed that after three months, the experimental group was found to have different scores on sexual function significantly (p <0.05). In addition, measures of problems in sexual function levels in the experimental group were lower than the control group.

This study suggested that nurses should provide sexual counseling knowledge and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assist patients and partners in sexual matters.
