Abstract

This pre-post quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effect of health literacy development programs on fluid retention prevention behavior in persons with heart failure. The participants were persons with heart failure, both males and females, aged 18 years and over. They were assigned using a purposive sampling technique and equally divided into control and experimental groups (30 for each group) using a matched pair technique based on age, sex, and education level. The control group received conventional nursing care, while the experimental group participated in the health literacy development program and routine nursing care. The research instruments included behavior questionnaires to prevent fluid retention and assess health literacy regarding heart failure and fluid retention.  Dependent t-test and independent t-test statistics were used to analyze the data.

The results revealed that the behavior score of preventing fluid retention in persons with heart failure in the experimental group after participating in the health literacy development program was significantly higher than that before participating in the program (p < .05). In addition, the behavior score of preventing fluid retention in persons with heart failure in the experimental group after participating the health literacy development program was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < .05).

This study suggests nurses can use the health literacy development program to improve fluid retention behavior in persons with heart failure.
