Leadership style and innovation culture in nursing organization: a systematic review

This systematic review aimed to summarize the utilization of concepts and theories examining leadership style and innovation culture. The databases searched encompassed research articles published from January 2013 to December 2023, in both English and Thai, sourced from various platforms such as CINAHL, ScienceDirect, Emerald Insight, PubMed, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Thai Journals Online (ThaiJO), and Thai digital collection (ThaiLIS). The quality of the articles was assessed using the Kmet Lee and Cook Quality Rating Scale and the contingency coefficient Kendall's tau-b to test the agreement between the research report and the inter-rater.
The research findings: 1) Most articles studied abroad do not address nursing management in Thailand. All studied sample groups in business organizations (n = 10) were the largest among employees (n = 7), with a maximum sample size of 3,125 individuals. All descriptive statistics were used. 2) Research articles predominantly utilize Bass & Avolio's theory of transformational leadership (n = 9). While there were a variety of cultural innovation concepts, clarity regarding their application is lacking. Only two research reports utilize O'Reilly's innovation culture concept. The results of studies indicated a direct correlation between transformational leadership styles and innovation culture.
This research indicates the absence of studies on the correlation between leadership styles and cultural innovation in Thailand, particularly within healthcare organizations. Moreover, the lack of clarity regarding cultural innovation variables necessitates. Thus, the knowledge in this area should be extended to foster ongoing development in nursing management practices.
