Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of a self-care promotion program for the prevention of infective endocarditis, delivered via the LINE application, on the knowledge and behaviors of caregivers of children with congenital heart disease. The sample consisted of 52 caregivers of children aged 3–6 years with congenital heart disease who were receiving treatment at Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health. Participants were selected using convenience sampling based on the inclusion criteria and were divided into an experimental group and a control group, with 26 participants in each group. The experimental group received the self-care promotion program for the prevention of infective endocarditis via the LINE application. The program was developed based on Orem’s supportive-educative nursing system framework. The instruments used for data collection consisted of the following questionnaires: (1) a demographic questionnaire, (2) a knowledge questionnaire on the prevention of infective endocarditis, and (3) a behavioral questionnaire on the prevention of infective endocarditis. Data collection was first conducted in the control group and then in the experimental group. Data from the experimental group were collected over seven sessions within a one-month period. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

The results showed that, after receiving the program, caregivers in the experimental group had significantly higher mean knowledge and behavior scores than those in the control group and than their own pre-program scores (p < .05).

The findings of this study suggest that nurses can utilize the developed self-care promotion program, delivered via the LINE application, to enhance caregivers’ knowledge and promote self-care behaviors for the prevention of infective endocarditis, thereby improving the overall quality of care.
