Selected Factors Affecting the Participation of Generation Y Professional Nurses in Quality Improvement at Provincial Hospitals, Regional Health 9

Abstract

Objectives: This descriptive research study examined the level of participation and selected variables (personal characteristics and motivation) affecting the participation of Generation Y professional nurses participating in the quality improvement of provincial hospitals, regional health 9. Methods: The sample consisted of 432 professional nurses aged between 20 and 40 years, working at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, Chaiyaphum Hospital, Buriram Hospital, and Surin Hospital. The instruments consisted of three parts including personal characteristics, motivation, and the hospital quality improvement participation. Content validity was determined by five experts, resulting in a content validity index (CVI) of 1.00, .97, and .97, respectively. Reliability of motivation questionnaire and participation in the hospital quality improvement was checked by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, yielding the values of .98 and .97. The data were analyzed using frequency statistics, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and multiple regression analysis. Results: The
level of participation of Generation Y professional nurses in the quality improvement process of provincial hospitals was at high level (M = 3.53, SD = .53). Stepwise regression analysis on the variables based on Herzberg’s motivation theory to construct a prediction model revealed that work characteristics, personal life, work status, work achievement, and responsibility can predict the hospital quality improvement participation and altogether explained variance for 42.20 percent (R2 = .422). Conclusion: The use of the Herzberg’s motivation theory to encourage participation in hospital quality improvement is important for Generation Y professional nurse.
