Abstract

Objectives: To explore the effectiveness of a home-based bedridden care program on ability and quality of care among family caregivers of bedridden patients in Tha Uthen Community, Nakhon Phanom Province. Methods: This Quasi-experimental one group pre-posttest design. The sample was 27 family caregivers of bedridden patients who were selected with inclusion criteria. The sample attended the home-based bedridden care program, namely lecture (24 hours), demonstration and return demonstration (32 hours) and field practice (14 hours) for a total of 70 hours. The outcomes were measured by assessing the family caregivers’ ability to care, which was divided into 3 dimensions, namely knowledge, attitude and practice, and observation of the quality of care of family caregivers for bedridden patients before and after participation in the program. The content validity index of 3 questionnaires were 1 and the reliability was .71, .86, .93, and .83, respectively. Data were collected between August and November 2022. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. Results: Scores on the knowledge, attitude and practice of caregivers increased after participating in the program with statistical significance (Z = -4.30, p < .001; Z = -4.03, p < .001; Z = -4.38, p < .001, respectively). In addition, the median score of quality of care in overall aspects after the intervention was significantly higher than that of before the intervention (Z = -4.54, p < .001). Conclusion: Nurses can use the program for the home-based care of bedridden patients and to prepare and develop family caregivers to gain the ability to provide home-based care for bedridden patients. As a result, bedridden patients can receive quality care with reduced likelihood of preventable complications.
