The effect of cold compression as the pain and bleeding in the area of Botulinum Toxin typeA injection for hemifacialspasm patients

Abstract
Background: A 5-minutes cold compress can reduce pain during and after injection of Botulinum toxin type A, but the cold compress around the eye ball–where skin is very sensitive will cause a pain from the cold. The reduction of cold compress duration to 1-minute is reported to ease this pain and comfort the patients.
Objective: To study the duration effect of cold compresses on pain relief and reduction of bleeding at the injection area of botulinum toxin type A for hemifacialspasm patients.
Materials and methods: A double-blind, randomized controlled study of 28 hemifacialspasm patients with administrated at the spastic clinic Buddhasothorn Hospital. The 28 patients were randomly divided into 2 groups : the experimental group received a 1-minute cold compress prior to the botulinum toxin type A injection and secondly the control group received a 5-minutes cold compress before the injection.
Results: The experimental group and the control group had the pain score 3.3±1.5 and 2.8±1.8. Bleeding at the injection site was 14.3% and 7.1% which was no statistical differences (p = 0.43, p = 1)
Conclusions: A 1-minute and 5-minutes cold compress prior of Botulinum toxin type A injection for hemifacialspasm patients had not statistical differences in decreasing pain (NRS) and bleeding at injection site.
