Pregnancy outcomes in primiparous pregnant teenagers in Bangyai

Abstract

 

Objective : To compare maternal and neonatal outcomes of primiparous pregnant teenagers (age<20years)) and primiparous pregnant adults age 20-34 years.

Material and Method : This was a retrospective analytic study. The study group consisted of 132 primiparous pregnant teenagers admitted and delivered at Bangyai Hospital during October 1, 2010 and September 30, 2011. A control group consisted of 123 primiparous pregnant women aged between 20-34 years old. Demographic data, obstetric complications and neonatal outcomes were collected and compared between the study group and control group.

Results : The results showed that the control group completed antenatal care program more than the study group.(73 percent vs 57 percent p = 0.003) Teenage mothers had significantly higher incidence of neonatal low birth weight (16 percent vs 8 percent p = 0.004) and respiratory distress syndrome (3.8 percent vs 0 percent p = 0.034).

Conclusion : From these findings, pregnant teenagers had higher rate of inadequate antenatal care. And pregnant teenagers had more neonatal complications than control group.
