Abstract

Objective : The purpose of this study was evaluate the effects of health promotion with Elastic Band Exercise between cycle elastic band and thera-band exercise on static balance and mobility function in elderly people.

Methods : This is a randomized Controlled trial. The thirty-one healthy elderly people who live in Talad District Muang Amphur Chanthaburi Province were recruited and randomly assigned in two groups;cycle elastic band groups (aged 67.81±5.26) and thera-band group (aged 66.39 ± 5.42). Both groups were resisted exercise training program with cycle elastic band and thera-band groups in 8-weeks, three-sessions-per-week. Measurement: primary outcome was Berg balance scale and second outcome was a 30-second chair stand test, one leg stand test, forward shift test, 8 - ft up and go test and walk speed test. All test were measured before the exercise program, 8 week post exercise program and 16 week follow up.

Results : The cycle elastic band group consisted of 15 women and 1 man. The theraband group consisted of 13 women and 2men. The study found that both groups; Berg balance scale, 30-second chair stand test, one leg stand test, forward shift test increased significantly (p<0.001) and 8- ft up and go test and walk speed test decreased significantly (p<0.05) after the 8-week. The cycle elastic band group improved more than the thera-band group, but no significant (p>0.05) excepts one leg stand test in the cycle elastic band group increased significantly (p <0.05). A two-way analysis of variances follow-up after the 16-week elastic band exercise program revealed that both groups; Berg balance scale ,30-second chair stand test, one leg stand test and forward shift test increased significantly (p<0.001), in the cycle elastic band group ;8- ft up and go test decreased significantly (p<0.005),walk speed test increased significantly (p<0.001) and in the thera-band group ; 8- ft up and go test there was no significant (p>0.05) increase, walk speed test there was no significant (p>0.05) decrease compared the baseline.

Conclusion : The resisted exercise training program with cycle elastic band improved balance in elderly people as similarly as the thera-band which low price and convenience to use. These results also persists after the program of Elastic Band Exercise in the strength of leg muscles, the static balance and berg balance scales excepted 8- ft up and go and walk speed. Therefore,we should find a form of exercise that influence changes in the function mobility to appropriate the program.
