Teenage pregnancy at Trat Hospital

Abstract

Objective : The objective of the study was to determine the incidence of teenage pregnancy at Trat Hospital and compare obstetric and neonatal complications of primigravida teenage mothers and primigravida adult mothers.

Material and Method : This is a retrospective study conducted at the Department of Obstetric Gynecology, Trat Hospital. The study group consisted of 1328 primigravida women aged 13 - 20 years who gave birth at Trat Hospital from January 1,2006 to December 31,2009. The control group consisted of 1760 primigravida women aged 21 - 35 years and gave birth during the same period. Demographic, obstetric and neonatal complications were collected and compared between the study group and the control group.

Results : The study found that The incidence of teenage pregnancy at Trat Hospital was 18.42 percent. The study group had a higher preterm delivery rate than the control group [16.3 percent vs 9.7 percent, p < 0.001]. Also same in Anemia [21.3 percent vs 9.9 percent, p <0.001] and low birth weight [11.5 percent vs 8.5 percent, p 0.003]. The study group had more inadequate antenatal care than the control group [17.8 percent vs 10.6 percent, p <0.001]. The level of education found that the study group had more incidences in secondary school than the control group [66.6 percent vs 27.6 percent, p < 0.001]. Vaginal delivery was the major route of delivery in the study group and cesarean section was found in the control group more than the study group.

Conclusion : The incidence of teenage pregnancy at Trat Hospital was 18.55 percent.Anemia and preterm labor were the obstetric complications in this group.Teenage mothers had lower level of education and inadequate antenatal care compare to the control group. Neonatal complication in this study was low birth weight.
