Abstract

OBJECTIVE : To search and analyse problems of maternal-child health in Department  of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Prapokklao hospital with control chart.

Methodes : Data gathered from the records of monthly perinatal mortality conference at Prapokklao hospital, Chanthaburi from 1997 to 2011. Control chart was used to demonstrate and analyse the maternal-child health indices such as perinatal mortality rate, stillbirth rate, neonatal death rate, teenage pregnancy, low-birth weight infant and etc.

Results : Since 1997, the number of pregnant women who went to delivery at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Prapokklao hospital has been increasing every year. The perinatal mortality rate has been
decreasing from 12.6 in 1997 to 10.62 in 2011 but from control chart showed no statistically significant. Also the stillbirth rate, neonatal death rate and low birth weight infant, that from control chart
demonstrated, showed no significantly change. Rate of teenage pregnancy increased significantly from 2004 to 2011 especially from 2010 to 2011.Also the rate of preterm birth increased significantly from 2007 to 2010.
Although the rate dropped in the beginning of the year 2012, it significantly increased from June, 2012. The increasing pattern of control chart between teenage pregnancy and preterm labor made it an interesting
correlation although not statistically compared. The number of pregnant women who completed antenatal care program did not make the good correlation with the rate of preterm labor from the control chart using.

Conclusions : Teenage pregnancy and preterm labor are two problems that increase statistically. Control chart is one of interesting and valuable instruments that can be used for searching and analyzing problems in maternal-child health
