Cause and risk factors of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in.

Abstract

Objective : To identifieid the causes and risk factors of UGIB in Sawankhaloke Hospital.

Material and method : Seventy-eight patients which suspected UGIB have been done esophagogastroduodenoscopy from November 2008 to October 2009 were recruited into the study.

Result : The major cause of UGIB is gastric ulcer which account for 55.1 percent. Gastritis was found in 36 patients ( 46.2 percent). Duodenitis was found in 18 patients (23.1 percent). The three main risk factors of
UGIB were NSAIDs, smoking and alcohol drinking. The majority of H.pylori was found in gastric ulcer cases. Conclusion : The major cause of UGIB is gastric ulcer and the risk factor is NSAIDs use.
