Ocular trauma in Trat Hospital.

Abstract

Objective : To determine the causes of ocular trauma, effect on eye, treatment and result of treatment in Trat Hospital

Method : This descriptive analysis study of patients with ocular trauma at Trat hospital between 1 Jan 2007 and 29 Feb 2008. The details of patients regarding sex, age, occupation, cause of trauma, effect on eye, treatment, initial visual acuity (VA) and VA after treatment were collected.

Result :A total of 217 patients (239 eyes) were recorded as ocular trauma. Most patients (77.88 percent) were male and 37.79 percent were in the age group of 21-40 years. Approximately half of patients were employee. Most causes of eye injury were traffic accident (25.81 percent), working in agriculture (21.20 percent) and construction (14.29 percent). The most common type of injury was closed-globe injury (30.13 percent). About 27.65 percent of patient underwent surgical intervention. A few of patients (1.38 percent) were referred. Blindness of 14 eyes were found.

Conclusion : The majority causes of ocular trauma and blindness were caused by traffic accident and work related activities which were preventable. Health education and safety strategies should consider. Closed globe injuries were more commonly than open globe injuries but caused less number of blindness.Approximately half can be treated by medication. After treatment of 239 eyes, there were 14 eyes blind and 67 eyes (28.03 percent) had first level visual acuity.
