Effect of body weight control using portable scale on the control of insulin independent diabetes melitus.

Abstract

Objective : To compare the DM control outcome among patients using portable scales and those who dont use.

Material and Methods : This Quasi - experimental research focused on effect of using portable scale on disease control in terms of fasting plasma glucose and body weight. The enrolled patients were insulin - independent DM and have been treated in the DM clinic of Thamai Hospital, Chanthaburi Province . There were 82 cases divided into experimental and control groups, which 41 cases in each group. The experimental group had their weight measured using portable scale before breakfast and dinner.The data were analyzed by the method of percentages, means, descriptive statistics and compare means by t-test .

Result : 1. The experimental group could control disease statistically better than the control group at the level =< 0.5
2. The experimental group could control their body weight statistically better than the control group at the level =< 0.5

Conclusion : This study indicates a better control of DM by using a portable scale to measure their weights before having breakfast and dinner, and this should be considered and implemented in all DM clinics.
