Prevalence of overweight,obesity and co-morbidities among adults aged > 20 years in Tambon Chantanimit Amphur Muang Chanthaburi Province.

Abstract

Context : Overweight and obesity are increasing continuously and contributing substantially to chronic health problems worldwide.

Objective : To find prevalence of overweight and obesity ,to identified the association between overweight status and interested characteristics and describe the relationship between overweight status and risks of health problems(high blood pressure,diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia) in Tambon Chantanimit Amphur Muang Chanthaburi Province,Thailand

Design and Setting : Cross-sectional survey by systematic sampling from population in Tambon Chantanimit Amphur Muang Chanthaburi Province during 2003 Participants : A total of 385 adults,20 years of age and over,classified into overweight group or obesity group based on WHO criteria for defining overweight and obesity,1998(overweight BMI>25 kg/m2,obese BMI>30 kg/m2)

Main Outcome Measures : Prevalence of overweigh and obesity in Tambon Chantanimit Amphur Muang Chanthaburi Province, and relationship between overweight and health risks(high blood pressure diabetes mellitus dyslipidemia) by Odds ratio,95 percent CI

Results : Body mass indexes indicating overweight and obesity were found in 30.4 and 12.5 percent of participants respectively.Overweight and obesity in these participants were significantly associated with obesity in other family member.The prevalence of overweight and obesity in participants who had obesity in other family member was significantly higher than who had not (58.7 percent and 26.5 percent).Compared with adults of normal weight,those with a BMI of 25 or higher had a odds ratio(OR) of 2.05(95 percent confidence interval,1.28-3.29) for high blood pressure,2.06(95 percent CI,1.31-3.24) for high blood triglyceride level and 2.07(95 percent CI,1.22-3.52) for low blood HDL level in women.

Conclusions : Based on these results,nearly half of all adults whose ages were 20 years and older in Tambon Chantanimit Amphur Muang Chanthaburi Province were considered overweight or obese people.The rather high prevalence of obesity-related comorbidities emphasize the need for concerted efforts to prevent and treat obesity rather than just its associated co-morbidities.
