Abstract

Purpose : To Demonstrate and identify the result of manual small incision cataract surgery using Nylon Loop Technique

Material and Method : Prospective noncomparative pilot study in 45 eyes of 45 patients who had undergone cataract extraction using nylon loop technique during October 2004 through June 2005. The capsulorhexis, clear corneal incision, hydrodissection and anterior cortical debris aspiration were done.Cataract lens was separated into two fragments using nylon loop, then each fragment was removed through temporal clear corneal incision with two Sinskey hooks. The intraocular lens was implanted in the capsular bag .

Results : This method of cataract extraction was performed for 45 eyes of 45 patients. The common intraoperative and postoperative complications were iris prolapse (15.56 percent) and corneal edema (13.3 percent). There was no posterior capsule rupture and no serious complication occurred. Postoperative best corrected visual acuity was better than 20/40 in 73.3 percent at first postoperative week.

Conclusion : Manual small incision cataract surgery using nylon loop technique is safe, easy, and does not require an expensive instrumentation.
