The incidence and complications of teenage pregnancy in Nongyai

Abstract

Background : Teenage pregnancy has been social and public health problems in Thailand
especially in the present decade. The number of teenage pregnancy
has been increasing in which contrast to those of developed country. The
pregnant has low ability to manage antenatal and child care consequently
resulted in poor obstetric outcomes.
Objective : Study incidence of the teenage pregnancy and compare obstetric outcomes
of teenage pregnancy with pregnant women (20-35years) at the hospital.
Design : A retrospective-descriptive study.
Setting : Nongyai Hospital, Chonburi Province
Method : A retrospective study was conducted at Nongyai Hospital. The study group
consisted of teenage women (below 20 years) who gave birth at Nongyai Hospital during October,1st 2010 to September,30th 2012.The control group consisted of pregnant women (20-35 years) who gave birth during the same period. Demographic data, obstetric and neonatal complications were collected and compared between two groups.

Results : Total of 906 deliveries was Thai 521 deliveries. Teenage pregnancy consisted of 170 women (accounted for 30.4 percent of total pregnancy) and the control group consisted of 351 women. The study group had more incomplete antenatal care than the control group (19.4 percent vs 16.9 percent ,p=.009). The study group had lesser antenatal care before 12 weeks than those of the control group (47.6 percent vs 50.1 percent, p<0.001). Vaginal delivery was the major route of delivery in the study group compare to the control group (98.2 percent vs 97.1 percent ,p<0.001). Obstetric complications were found higher in the study group than the control group : in anemia(25.2 percent vs 14.5 percent , p=.409) preterm delivery (18.2 percent vs 10.8 percent, p=.399) postpartum hemorrhage (2.3 percent vs 1.7 percent, p=.527) and low birth weight (11.2 percent vs 8.8 percent , p=.123).

Conclusion : The teenage pregnancy rate at Nongyai Hospital was 30.4 percent. Obstetric and neonatal complications of teenage pregnancy were anemia, preterm delivery, postpartum hemorrhage and low birth weight but not statistical significance.
