Abstract

Background: Febrile convulsion is common and usually occurs between six months and five years of age. Simple febrile convulsion is not harmful but can be frightening to the parents. So the proper first aid and the benign nature of febrile convulsion should be insisted in the patient education.


Objective: To study the behaviors of the parents of children with febrile convulsion


Materials and Methods: 30 cases of febrile convulsion aged six months to four years old, attending at inpatient department of Prapokklao Hospital were interviewed with two questionnaires.


Result: Most of the parents evaluated the febrile children by using their touch sensation at the forehead, only 13.3 percentage used the thermometer. Tepid sponge was done correctly in most cases. Ninety percent of cases preferred to use paracetamol at the intervals of less than 6 hours. Reevaluation of fever after management were done in only 10 percentage of cases. Most of the parents (70 percentage) still held the children and tried to wake them up and 10 percentage of cases still placed object in the child’s mouth during convulsion.


Conclusion: These findings suggested that fever evaluation were done incorrectly in most cases. Improper first aid management that may be harmful were still be done by some parents. Short interval of paracetamol administration may be prone to overdoses.
