บทคัดย่อ
หอมแดงเป็นพันธุ์ไม้ (พันธุ์) ของหัวหอม จนถึงปี 2010 หอมแดงจัดเป็นสายพันธุ์ที่แยกจากกัน Allium ascalonicum ชื่อที่เป็นคำพ้องความหมายของ Allium cepa ซึ่งเป็นชื่อสายพันธุ์ของหัวหอมเป็นชื่อที่ถูกต้องของพันธุ์หอมแดง ญาติสนิท ได้แก่ กระเทียม ต้นหอม กระเทียมต้น กุ้ยช่าย และต้นหอมจีน หอมแดงอาจมีต้นกำเนิดในเอเชียกลางหรือเอเชียตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ เดินทางจากที่นั่นไปยังอินเดียและเมดิเตอร์เรเนียนตะวันออก
