Abstract
Genetic disease and congenital birth defect are the crucial problems of public health that have an impact on many aspects such as family economics social in developing countries. As a consequence of the genetic disease the suffering involves the entire family. Nowadays the prenatal diagnosis plays an important role among high risk pregnant woman who are 35 years old or more to identify the chromosomal abnormalities of fetus in the womb or preimplantation. The Objective of this study is to access the knowledge and attitude of pregnant omen before counseling for prenatal diagnosis. Materials and Methods: 90 pregnant women were referred to genetic counseling during September to October 2004. In antenatal Clinic Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Phramongkutklao Hospital. Questionnaires about knowledge and attitude to genetic disease and prenatal iagnosis (PND) were done by the sample group. Results: The mean score of knowledge about genetic disease and PND was 40%. If the result was abnormal 40% knew about termination of pregnancy (TOP). About 60% were anxious about pain and complication of PND procedure 83% agreed with PND if they have risk of chromosomal abnormality and genetic disease. Conclusions: Knowledge about chromosomal abnormality and prenatal diagnosis was low. Attitude before PND could be better if they had more information about PND.
