Abstract

Introduction: Postoperative sore throat is a common complication in patients receiving general anesthesia, which could be found up to 60% of the patients. Benzydramine hydrochloride is a medicine used to treat sore throats with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Objective: To compare the incidence of postoperative sore throat between spraying benzydamine hydrochloride on the endotracheal tube cuff and oropharynx versus placebo (normal saline). Methods: This was a randomized double-blind controlled trial in patients undergoing surgery at Burapha University Hospital. One hundred and two patients were divided into 2 groups equally. Both groups received general anesthesia intubation. Group B (Benzydamine hydrochloride group) received benzydamine hydrochloride spraying on the endotracheal tube cuff and oropharynx while Group C (Control group) received placebo. Sore throat scores and side effects (numbness, burning sensation and dry mouth) were recorded at 1, 4 and 24 hours after surgery. Results: The incidence of postoperative sore throat of Group B is significantly less less than that of Group C at 1 and 4 hours after surgery (p = 0.027 and 0.017, respectively), and the side effects of both groups were not different. Conclusion: Spraying benzydamine hydrochloride on the endotracheal tube cuff together with oropharynx helps to reduce the incidence of postoperative sore throat significantly at 1 and 4 hours after surgery without additional side effects.
