The Health Seeking Behaviors of the Elderly among the Kui Ethnic Community in North Eastern Province of Thailand

Abstract
This descriptive research aimed to describe the health seeking behaviors of the elderly among the Kui ethnic community. A sample of the 409 elderly participants drawn from 3 Sub-District Health Promoting Hospitals in Krapho Sub-District, Tatoom District, Surin province were selected by stratified random sampling. Data were collected using six instruments and analyzed through descriptive statistics. The results revealed that most of the sample were female with a mean age of 71.4 years, and they used 2 or 3 sectors of the health service system at the same time and interchangeably in the 3 sectors (Popular, Folk and Professional sector). The health seeking behavior was significantly related to age, income, exercise, pain medication intake, health status perception and social ability. The Kui Traditional and Cultural self-care practices and confidence in the health service system were also related to the health seeking behaviors. The results suggested that community nurses should understand the traditional and cultural beliefs of the Kui elderly and apply this knowledge to health promotion, prevention, rehabilitation and use this result in developing the health care system for the elderly.
