Abstract

This predictive correlational study aimed to examine predictive factors of self-care behavior for the prevention of chronic kidney disease among people with hypertension. The sample consisted of 186 hypertensive patients who registered and received medical treatment at a health promoting hospital, Muang Uttaradit. The questionnaire used for data collection was developed by researchers and was composed of patients’ demographic data, knowledge, self-care behaviors, and perceptions regarding the prevention of chronic kidney disease from hypertension. The questionnaire was sent to five experts for validity testing, and the Index of Congruence (IOC) ranged from .60-1.00 and the Cronbach alpha coefficients of its components were .72, .71, and .76, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression. The results revealed that perceived severity and perceived barriers to the prevention of chronic kidney disease from hypertension together can explain 7.6% of the variance of self-care behavior among people with hypertension to the prevention of chronic kidney disease. (R2=.076, Adj R2=.066, SEE=3.452, F=7.548, p<.05) It is suggested that healthcare workers should develop strategies to promote the perception of the severity of chronic kidney disease due to hypertension.
