Effects of the Competency Development Program for Elderly Caregivers with Chronic Disease on Knowledge and Skills in Preventing the Spread of COVID-19

Abstract

This research used two groups pretest-posttest quasi experimental design. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of a competency development program on knowledge and skills of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) of older people with chronic illness caregiver. The subject groups were caregivers car­ing for 60 older adults in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Thirty subjects. were assingto a control and a treatment groups. The treatment was a b-week skill development program for COVID-19 prevention and control, developed and based on Gibson’s empowerment framework for 6 weeks. The data collection instruments were personal information sheet, a questionnaire on Knowledge of COVID-19 prevention for older persons with chronic diseases, and a questionnaire on self-evaluation on COVID-19 prevention skills for older persons with chronic diseases. The statistics used in data analysis were descriptive statistics and t-test. The findings re­ported that after completing the program the subjects in the treatment group rated their knowledge and skill toward COVID-19 prevention for older persons with chronic diseases higher than before entering the program and had significantly better knowledge and skills toward COVID-19 prevention for older persons with chronic illness than the control group subjects.
