Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a weight loss motivational program delivered in a smart classroom setting on nursing students with high body mass indices in terms of their motivation to lose weight, their weight loss behaviors, their waist circumference, and their BMI. The quasi-experimental study used a two-group pretest-posttest design. Both an experimental group of 30 nursing students with a high body mass index who attended a nursing school in the province of Ubon Ratchathani and a comparison group of 30 students from the province of Nakhon Ratchasima made up the sample. The samples were selected at random. The research resources used included: 1) a 10-week smart classroom weight reduction motivation program which was created based on Keller's ARCS-V Motivation Model for the context of the 2019 Coronavirus Disease epidemic. The quality of tools were checked by experts with content validity index of 1.00. The learning activities were hybrid workshops held both on-site and online conducted from December 19, 2022 to February 26, 2023. This includes utilizing Google Classroom for instruction and learning via online resources, Google Meet for discussions to share knowledge, and the official LINE account for communication to spark motivation and monitor the balance between food intake and activity. 2) The questionnaire was divided into three parts: Part I was for personal information, Part II was for motivation to lose weight, and Part III was for conduct. Parts 2 and 3 both had content validity indices of 1.00 and Cronbach alpha coefficients of .91 and .92, respectively. Descriptive statistics and t-tests were used to assess the data. The outcomes showed that after joining the program, the experimental group had better weight loss motivation and weight loss behavior than before participating in the program, and better than the comparison group at a statistically significant level of .05. Waist circumference was lower than before joining the program at a statistically significant level of .05 and was not statistically significantly different from the comparison group at the .05 level, while body mass index was lower than before joining the program and was not statistically significantly different from the comparison group at the .05 level.
