Abstract

Mental health literacy and resilience have been an important foundation for the ability to self-care for mental health. The objective of this quasi-experimental research with a two-group pretest-posttest design was to study the effect of a mental health literacy promotion program on the mental self-health care ability of people. The sample consisted of 102 people in Thai Kham Sub district, Bang Pakong District, Chachoengsao Province equally divided into an experimental group and a control group. The instruments were the mental self-health care ability questionnaire and a mental health literacy promotion program, which were quality assessed by 3 experts (IOC=.88 and 1.00 respectively). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The differences in the mental self-care ability of the experimental group before and after the experiment, and between the experimental group and the control group, were determined by using independent and paired sample t-tests. The results of this study showed that after the experiment, mental self-health care ability of the experimental group was statistically higher than those before experiment at the p-value of .01, and higher than that of the control group at the p-value of .01. The mental health literacy promotion program  helps individuals  understand mental health issues and develop positive thinking, modify thinking appropriately, to help solve problems creatively, and to develop confidence and self-esteem.
