The comparative study on the effectiveness of media between Brochures and Video for teaching mastectomy patients at Department of Female Surgery, UdonThani Hospital

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effectiveness of teaching between using VCD and brochures on knowledge, exercise skills after surgery and media quality of Mastectomy     patients at department of female surgery Udonthani Hospital. The study subject included 60        Mastectomy patients undergoing breast cancer surgery during January 2017 to October 2017. Subject were convenience sampling assigned into experimental and comparison groups of 30 each. The     experimental group received teaching with VCD, while the comparison group received teaching with Brochures on the first admission day (1 day before surgery). Data were collected by using a knowledge questionnaire, skill assessment and quality of media questionnaire. The content was validated by 3 experts. The (Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) were 0.73, as well as Cronbach's Alpha       Coefficient also were 0.83, 0.71 and 0.70, respectively. The data was analyzed by using descriptive  statistics (percentage mean, standard deviation) and Independent sample t-test. 

Results: The knowledge mean score at pre-test of brochures group was x̄=6.03 (S.D. 1.58) and VCD group was x̄=6.03 (S.D. 1.57). Post test mean score of brochures group was x̄=7.93 (S.D. 1.11) and VCD group was x̄=8.63 (S.D. 1.22). Within each group, the knowledge score of each group was         significantly increased (p<0.05). The knowledge score after teaching of both group were increased   significantly statistic (p<0.05). The group received teaching with VCD (x̄=8.63, S.D. 1.07) score were higher than the group received teaching with brochures (x̄=7.93, S.D. 1.11) respectively with statistically different (p<0.05). The score of exercise skill after experiment were significant increased (p<0.05), the quality assessment of brochures found that the clarity of the illustration is the highest level (x̄=3.00, S.D. 0.00), for the VCD media with the highest mean (x̄=3.00, S.D. 0.00) of 3 items as follow picture is clear, the picture scene is suitable and the content is sequential easy to  follow.

Conclusions and recommendation: Mastectomy patients who receive information from teaching with VCD media or Brochures have increased knowledge. Nurses and healthcare team should have continued to use the both media to teach. There for is a very significant tool in improving quality of nursing care of Mastectomy patients. Evaluation of media quality The average is the same as 3 items with clarity of illustrations. There is a suitable form And the content in order to see and follow.
