Developing the role of radio amateurs in the event of emergency or disaster in northeastern Thailand

Abstract

This research studied the development of the function of amateur radio operators in the event of emergency or disaster in northeastern Thailand. Data was collected by interviews with stakeholders in amateur radio organizations certified by the Office of the National Broadcasting Television and Telecommunications Commission as amateur radio stations controlling provincial networks. The aim was to formulate guidelines for amateur radio operators performing duties during emergencies or disasters. The Northeast Amateur Radio Association (NARA) offered suggestions on three issues: 1) the role of Thai amateur radio operators in the event of disaster or emergency; 2) laws, announcements, or regulations related to Thai amateur radio operator duties during disasters or emergencies; and 3) related subjects. Results were that NARA proposed that central and provincial government agencies responsible for amateur radio matters and emergency and disaster management should provide concrete operational support for amateur radio operators to prepare for emergency and disaster situations.
