Using Porn Studies to Challenge the Pornography Paradigm as a Social Problem

This article 1) examines the porn studies paradigm in pornography research as a paradigm shift from viewing pornography as a social problem to studying it as
a sociocultural practice; and 2) explores knowledge production of porn studies scholars to reveal pornography research knowledge gaps in society in Thailand. Data was collected and synthesized from diverse pertinent documents. Results were that studying the topic of pornography with a porn studies approach is a paradigm shift from viewing pornography as a social problem. Porn studies scholars are often under supported in academic spaces. Yet knowledge production of porn studies scholars reveals complex dynamics of pornography, comprising technology, industry, problems, power, diversity, happiness, income, sexuality, and stigmatization of pornography industry stakeholders. These findings suggest that the porn studies approach in Thailand where knowledge from research on pornography is insufficiently diverse may facilitate policy and academic social change and debate on the issue of pornography from different viewpoints. Instead of merely focusing on harmful and beneficent effects of pornography on Thai society, the porn studies approach also explores pornography dynamics in Thai culture, building new social understanding with a wider perspective.
