Bibliometric Analysis of Mahidol University's International Publications in the Context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the trends and directions of international academic publications by Mahidol University between 2019 to 2023, with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data on all types of publications were retrieved from the SciVal database, totaling 20,302 publications. The study then analyzed the number of publications aligned with the SDGs, the quality of the journals, international collaborations, the Relative Achievement Index (RAI), research topics (Topic Clusters), and the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, which support the advancement of the SDGs. The findings indicate that Mahidol University published a total of 20,302 papers in international academic journals. The year 2022 saw the highest number of publications, with 4,751 papers (23.40%). Of these, 18,652 papers (91.87%) were published in journals ranked by Journal Quartile, with 9,713 papers (52.07%) appearing in Q1 journals, which are of the highest quality. A total of 11,685 publications (57.55%) were aligned with the SDGs, with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) being the most frequently addressed, accounting for 7,418 papers (63.48%) and receiving the highest number of citations, totaling 114,078. In contrast, SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) had the highest Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI). Regarding international collaborations, the study found that the university's publications were most frequently co-authored with researchers from the United Kingdom and the United States. In terms of the RAI index, SDG 3 had the highest value at 2.29, highlighting significant progress in achieving this goal. The most prominent research topics were COVID-19, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2, and Public Health. According to the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024, Mahidol University was ranked 19th globally and 1st in Thailand. These findings can serve as a foundation for strategic planning in research and advancing academic innovation to effectively achieve the SDGs.
