Abstract

The purposes of this research were to develop and investigate the effectiveness of a model to promote dental health care for independent physically-impaired persons. The research procedure was consisted of 2 stages: First, developing a model and second, examining the model’s effectiveness by employing a one-group, pre- and post-tests quasi-experimental design. The samples were 63 independent physically-impaired persons residing in Selaphum district, Roi-Et province recruited using purposive sampling. Instruments used in this study were the model to promote dental health care of independent physically-impaired persons and knowledge test and interview guidelines on dental health care. Data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and Wilcoxon sign ranks test.

The results of the study showed that the samples’ knowledge of dental health care was at a moderate level while their dental health care practices were at a low level. The model to promote dental health care for independent physically-impaired persons were comprised of 5 steps: (1) survey and evaluation oral health, (2) plan, (3) operate, (4) monitor, monitor and improvement and (5) summarizing. Experts agreed that the overall model was appropriate and feasible for use. Regarding the effectiveness of the dental health promotion model for independent physically-impaired person, it was shown that, after receiving the model, the sample’s knowledge and practices on dental health care were both significantly differed from before attending the model (p <0.01).
