Factors Affecting Safety Behaviors for Preventing Novel Coronavirus-2019 Infection among Personnel in Buriram Hospital

This survey research aimed to examine: (1) personal attributes and safety climate, (2) safety behaviors in response to novel coronavirus-2019 infection, and (3) factors affecting such safety behaviors, all among personnel in Buriram Hospital.
The study involved a sample 388 staff members selected using stratified sampling from all 2,384 medical service personnel in the hospital. Data were collected through an online questionnaire whose reliability coefficients for safety climate and safety behaviors were 0.93 and 0.84, respectively, and then analyzed with descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression.
The results revealed that: (1) Among all respondents with the mean age of 39.04 years, most of them were female, 68.7% had completed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, 36.1% were nurses, more than 60% had been working in inpatient and outpatient departments, had 11.65 years of hospital working experience on average, and 60.6% had no experience in hospital infection control. The safety climate related to novel coronavirus-2019 infection was at the high level. (2) Personnel’s safety behaviors in response to novel coronavirus-2019 infection were at the high level. (3) Factors significantly affecting safety behaviors for preventing novel coronavirus-2019 infection were safety climate and infection control experiences (α = 0.05; beta = 0.67 and 0.11, respectively). Both factors could explain 46.9% of the results (R2= 46.9).
