Effects of Psycho-education and Self-management Program on Medication Adherence among Individual with Schizophrenic in Thawat Buri Community, Roi et Province

This quasi-experimental research with two-group pretest and posttest design aimed to evaluate the effects of a psycho-education program and self-management on medication adherence among individuals with schizophrenia in the community. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants, who were then divided into two groups by time series, with 15 people per group. The comparison group received routine nursing care while the experimental group received psycho-education and a self-management program. Comparisons between means was measured for medication adherence among individuals with schizophrenia between the experimental group and the control group and the results showed the following : 1) there was a significant increase in the medication co-operation of schizophrenic patients' mean scores (Mean=75.93, SD=4.49) after receiving the psycho-education program (p.001, Mean df = 37.87, 95% CI=34.23–41.50); and 2) independent t-test used to compare differences in medication co-operation of schizophrenic patients mean scores between the two groups showed that the experimental group that participated in the psycho-education program had a higher mean score (Mean=75.93, SD=4.49) than those from the control group who received regular services (Mean=36.60, SD=3.02). It was also found that there was a significant difference between the two scores at p=0.05 (p=001, Mean df=39.33, 95% CI=36.46–42.19).
In conclusion, psycho-education program can be utilized as a model for promoting medication adherence in the schizophrenic population.
