Development of Clinical Nursing Practice Guideline for Pregnant Women Undergone Amniocentesis

This research and development study aimed to develop a nursing practice guideline for pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis and to examine the effects of developing such guidelines. Sample consisted of 2 groups: 1) 48 pregnant women who underwent amniocentesis, and 2) 3 registered nurses working in the antenatal and family planning unit at Chaiyaphum hospital. Tools used for pregnant women included a knowledge assessment on amniocentesis, an anxiety assessment, and a satisfaction survey. Tools for registered nurses were a post-intervention feedback questionnaire and a satisfaction survey. Data analysis was conducted using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, paired sample t-tests, and content analyses.
Results showed that: 1) the developed nursing practice guidelines emphasized multidisciplinary collaboration, including genetic counseling and continuous care both physically and psychologically before, during, and after amniocentesis and 2) the practice guidelines significantly improved the pregnant women's knowledge of amniocentesis and reduced their anxiety at 0.05 significant level. Mean satisfaction scores of both the pregnant women and the registered nurses were at a very high level.
It was suggested that the developing modern educational media such as digital media or applications to facilitate easy and clear access to information for service users, strengthening the psychological support system for pregnant women to reduce anxiety and increase confidence, and regularly organizing review sessions on amniocentesis and genetic counseling to provide updated information aligned with high-quality practice guidelines.
