Factors Related to Nutritional Status of the Head and Neck Cancer Older Patients Receiving Concurrent Radiochemotherapy

Abstract

This descriptive research aimed at studying the relationships among taste alteration, stress, social support, and nutritional status in older patients with head and neck cancer receiving concurrent radiochemotherapy. The sample consisted of 80 patients aged 60 years and above. The older patients who met the inclusion criteria were recruited in this study. The participants were interviewed using five instruments: the Demographic Questionnaire, the Taste Alteration Questionnaire, the Stress Questionnaire, the Social
Support Questionnaire, and the Mini Nutrition Assessment-Short Form. Data were collected from April 2019 to January 2020. Descriptive statistics and Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that 52.50% of the sample was at risk for malnutrition, and 36.25% had malnutrition. The sample’s taste alteration was between mild and severe levels. Most of them had low-level stress but high-level social support. Taste alteration and stress had a significant negative correlation with the nutritional status. However, there was no significant relationship between social support and nutritional status. Nurses should realize the importance of nutritional assessment, including stress and taste alteration, to continuously provide patients with the most appropriate treatment.
