Abstract

Sexual dysfunction in patients with acute myocardial infarction is caused by changes in the blood circulatory system to the peripheral organs, including the sex organ.Primary percutaneous coronary intervention is an effective treatment and evidence-based standard of care for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. However, the residual pathology with vascular complications after the procedure, especially the femoral arteries, may lead to impaired sexual functions, especially in male patients, that are erectile dysfunction, decreased orgasm, or abstaining from intercourse while maintaining a high level of sexual desire. Anxiety, fear, symptom exacerbation during sexual intercourse, treatments, and comorbidities may lead to sexual dysfunction and interfere with the enjoyment of sexual activities. Sexual health problems are found to be untreated or unaddressed at discharge, and they may negatively affect physical recovery, emotional well-being, and intimate partner relationships. This article provides basic knowledge about sexual functions in male patients, nurses’ roles, guidelines for the assessment of the sexual function problem, teaching and giving advice, sexual relation counseling, monitoring possible symptoms during sexual intercourse, and early management of symptoms. The nurse can apply this information to their clinical practice to promote sexual function in male patients with acute myocardial infarction after primary percutaneous coronary intervention.
