Abstract

Abstract: Since the intravenous fluid infusion is a life-saving intervention that has an essential role in patient management within the health care system. While the subject matters of skill-lap practice on human anatomy and physiology are challenge, many instructors look for new tools and methods of teaching that will give their students more experience in similar to the real situation. This quasi-experimental study was thus developed to investigate the satisfaction of nursing students, regarding practicing the intravenous catheter insertion procedure with blood reflux arm model. The utilization and satisfaction towards two types of arm model – a convention arm model and innovative arm model-were compared. This study was conducted on the Edgar Dale’s theoretical framework, which consisted of a theory of Cone Learning and the Nursing’s Code of Practical Ethics. A total of 152 nursing students were selected as a unit of study, participants were second-year nursing students from Ramathibodi School of Nursing who enrolled in the fundamental practicing course in year 2012. Two self-administered questionnaires were adopted as tools for data collection including personal information and satisfaction of practicing with arm model in many aspects including the realism, learning skill enhancement, ethical practice, and the applicability. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistic and Wilcoxon Signed-rank Test. The results revealed that the overall satisfaction level in using  blood reflux arm model was significantly higher than those in the conventional arm model. While most of the opinion expressed that by practicing with blood reflux arm model enhanced them to concern about patients' safety and comfortability. This study suggests a new effective tools for teaching the intravenous catheter insertion.
