Abstract

Abstract:
This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the desirable characteristics
of nursing students after implementing extra-curriculum activities program based on contemplative education. The 30 nursing students were purposively selected. Data were collected before and after implementing the 2-days extra-curriculum activities program based on contemplative education. The instruments used were the desirable characteristics of nursing student questionnaire and the students' learning record. Qualitative data were analyzed using percentage, mean and standard deviation, and paired t-test. Qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The results revealed that after participation in the program, nursing students reported a significantly higher level of desirable characteristics than before the participation. The students reported a high level of goodness, a high level of competence and the highest level of happiness. Results from the focus group revealed that nursing students reflected that their desirable characteristics in all aspects were developed by participating in the program. They reflected their goodness in responsibility, respecting themselves and others, and gratitude. They also reflected their competence in leadership and team working, knowledge and curiosity, and mindfulness. Their happiness was reflected by valuing themselves and others, having love and sharing, and having a peaceful mind. The extra-curriculum activities based on the contemplative education promote the students’ inner growth in goodness, competence, and happiness. Therefore, the program should be extended to all students.
