The study of drug eruption in patients at Thammasat University Hospital
Keywords:
drug eruption, maculopapular rash, antimicrobial agentsAbstract
Objective: To evaluate prevalence of patients who had drug eruption including patients' demographics, clinical manifestations and type of drugs involved.
Materials and Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study which targeted all in-patients and out-patients who had drug eruption during 1 September 2009 -31 August 2011.
Results: A total of 235 patients were diagnosed with drug eruption. The most common causative drugs were antimicrobial agents which cephalosporin group (16.5%) was the most frequently involved, followed by NSAIDs (14.04%) and penicillin group (11.06%). The most common presentation was maculopapular rash (63.54%), followed by urticaria (21.8%) and epidermal necrolytic syndrome (8.5%). One patient was died from major drug eruption. Furthermore, some new antimicrobial agents trend to cause drug eruptions more than prior studies.
Conclusion: Antimicrobial agents were the most common cause of drug eruption and maculopapular rash was the most common manifestation.
