Abstract

Background: Although androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hair loss in men, standardized qualitative reports about impact on Quality of Life (QoL) are lacking. Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) is a simple and practical questionnaire. To our knowledge, there is no report about the impact of AGA on the QoL of Thai men.

Objective: To assess the QoL in Thai men with AGA using DLQI.

Material and Method: This study enrolled fifty Thai men with AGA. Each subject completed DLQI questionnaire within 5 minutes.

Results: The mean (SD) of overall DLQI score was 5.08 (4.56). The highest individual mean score came from Question 2 (embarrassment) while the lowest individual mean score came from Question 9 (sexual difficulties). In this study, severity of AGA and patient age did not significantly influence QoL.

Conclusion: This study demonstrates that AGA in Thai men affects their QoL. The results indicated that AGA had the greatest impact on their feelings or symptoms and the least impact on their personal relationship. Doctors should thoughtfully address the problems when caring for patients with this condition. DLQI is a useful and practical method to evaluate the quality of life of AGA patients.
