New Biologic Drugs for Thai Psoriasis Patients

Abstract

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease caused by T cell defect resulting in abnormal local and systemic cytokine production. This knowledge has led to the development of new treatment strategies targeting inflammatory cytokines or biologic drugs. They are given this name because they are derived from human or animal proteins instead of chemicals. Recently, they have been introduced for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque-type psoriasis. It can be categorized according to the mechanism of action into 1.Anti tumor necrosis factor alpha agents; Etanercept (Enbrel®), Adalimumab(Humira®),Infliximab (Remicaide®), 2. Anti T-cells agent ; Alefacept (Amevive®), and 3. Anti cytokine agent; Ustekinumab (Stelara®).  In this review article, we selected only the drugs that available in Thailand. However, Biologic drugs are new class of treatment which are very costly, so long term safety and cost effectiveness should be closely monitor.
