Abstract

Background : Male androgenetic alopecia is a common condition. It is influenced by androgen hormone. Finasteride is a potent type 2 5α-reductase inhibitor. It promotes hair growth and decrease hair loss as a result of dihydrotestosterone level reduction.

Objectives : To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 1 milligram oral finasteride in male androgenetic alopecia in Thailand.

Materials and Methods :Thirty-three patients had received 1 milligram oral finasteride every day for 6 months. Two dermatologists evaluated photographs of the patients by grading scale. The number of hair were counted. The participants answered questionnaires to assess their improvements. Adverse effects were also recorded.

Results : Fifty-five percent of the patients showed global clinical improvement. Hair count increased approximately 33 percent at 6 month. Hepatitis occurred in 1 patient. Neither sexual adverse events nor drug allergy were detected.

Conclusion : Oral finasteride 1 milligram per day is effective and safe in the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia in Thailand.
