HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVE ON LEARNING BASKETBALL COURSE THROUGH PHYSICAL EDUCATION GAME

Abstract

This qualitative research aimed to study the learning experiences, related factors affecting the learning, and needs of high school students learning basketball through physical education games (PEG). The key informants were 35 high school students. Research instrument: 12 basketball learning management plans using physical education games focused on game-based learning for skills and strategies. Data were collected through moderate participant observation, mind mapping, critical incident technique, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed inductively using the constant comparison method, and the credibility of the data was verified through triangulation. The results were divided into three main topics. The first topic, learning experiences, the positive experiences were improved classroom peer relationships, enhanced basketball skills of learners, and more enjoyment and increased participation in activities. The negative experience was injuries during learning. The second topic, factors affecting learning, supportive factors were classmates support and help each other, PEG made learning more fun and interesting, learning in sheltered areas avoiding direct sunlight, and teachers teach fun and approachable manner. Challenging factors were wet equipment or playing fields, poor basic skills affecting participation in PEG, aggressive play and lack of sportsmanship, and crowded fields due to sharing spaces with other classes. The Last topic, student needs were reducing aggressive play and increase sportsmanship and increase diversity in physical education games.
