Depression among Upper Secondary School Students: Concepts and Theoretical Frameworks, Synthesis of Risk Factors, Access to Mental Health Services, and Evidence-Based Prevention Strategies
Abstract
Depression among late adolescent high school students has become an increasingly serious mental health concern in recent years. The risk factors are associated with biological, psychological, familial, sociocultural, school-related, and broader social contexts. In addition, access to mental health services for this group remains limited due to various multidimensional factors such as mental health literacy, stigma, availability of personnel, and service system constraints. Consequently, preventing depression among adolescents requires multisectoral integration.
This article aims to synthesize knowledge regarding: (1) the definition, clinical characteristics, and current situation of depression among late adolescent high school students; (2) risk and protective factors at the individual, family, school, societal, and technological levels; (3) theoretical perspectives and key concepts explaining depression; and (4) evidence-based prevention strategies at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, including the development of school mental health programs, the promotion of mental health literacy, proactive screening, and enhanced access to services within the healthcare system.
Addressing depression among late adolescent high school students requires an emphasis on both systemic and individual-level prevention. This involves collaboration among families, schools, health professionals, communities, and national policies. Evidence indicates that integrated school-based interventions, adolescent empowerment, and improved access to mental health services can effectively reduce risk and promote emotional well-being among adolescents.
