Blood Preparation for Elective Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Maharat Nakhonratchasima Hospital: a Retrospective Study
Keywords:
blood preparation, elective cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, preoperative blood orderingAbstract
Background: Excessive surgical blood preparation causes loss of expenses and increases workload of personnel. The study was aimed to know the blood preparation for the cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries. Methods: This was a retrospective study of blood preparation in patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. Measurements were based on blood suitability calculations by the crossmatch to transfusion (C/T ratio), transfusion probability (%T) and transfusion index (Ti). Results: 512 patients underwent surgery. The blood preparation in all pediatric opened heart surgeries was appropriate. Five types of pediatric closed heart surgeries were performed with a C/T ratio greater than 2.5. In adult, atrial septal defect closure and pericardectomy surgeries had an improper blood preparation and were found to have a C/T ratio greater than 2.5. The improper blood preparation was also found in both pediatric and adult intrathoracic surgeries. Conclusion: An improper blood preparation was observed in most of all elective cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries except in opened heart surgery. It would be helpful to implement a blood preparation guideline.
