Development of a Teaching and Learning Model based on Mastery Learning for a Course on Laws Related to the Nursing and Midwifery Profession

Managing teaching and learning regarding nursing and midwifery professional laws and related laws is essential to prevent nurses from misconduct of nursing care, being sued, and being condemned in accordance with the laws. The objective of this developmental research was to develop a teaching and learning model for a course on laws related to the nursing and midwifery profession based on Mastery learning. The sample population were 138 third-year nursing students studying in that course during the second semester of the 2015 academic year. The population were separated into the trial and control group. Each group contains 69 students. The trial group was taught using Mastery learning teaching model while the control group was provided with the normal standard schooling. Research instruments included: 1) teaching plans, 2) web-based instruction videos, 3) case studies for class teaching, 4) posttests on website,5) quizzes at the beginning of class teaching, 6) a summative test before midterm and final examination, and 7) the students’ reflection regarding teaching.
The results of this study were:
- 1. The teaching and learning model for a course on laws related to the nursing and midwifery profession based on Mastery learning consisted of 1 ) using the course objective as a guide for managing the teaching and learning, 2) grouping the study content into separate headings with a specific objectives for each heading, 3) choosing appropriate and effective teaching media including web-based instruction videos and case studies for class teaching, 4) operating short tests for each teaching unit including a short post-test on the web and a quiz at the beginning of each teaching class and, 5) seeking and improving the weakness through the tests and case study analysis.
- 2. The results of teaching and learning in the trial group was more effective than the control group. The trial group gain the scores of the summative test significantly before midterm and final examination more than the control group (t=3.48, p < .001 and t=2.93, p < .01)
The Faculty of Nursing educational administrators can employ the results of this study to promote the faculty instructors who teach a nursing and midwifery professional law and laws related to apply Mastery learning in their teaching. Also, the instructors who teach the course can apply the findings for continuing improving their teaching appropriately.
