Abstract

Breast milk has more benefits for premature infants include for maturity and growth development. Several studies expressed that the mothers of premature infant trend to decrease the production of milk. Thus, supporting of lactation maintaining among mother of preterm infants is crucial which the target is to protect breast milk production and promoting adequate milk for the need of premature infants. Therefore, a large number of studies are designed for that, but have not been able to find out the systematic review. The aims of the study are; methods and effectiveness of supported maintaining of lactation among mother of preterm infants on amount of breast milk, an adequate of milk, breastfeeding duration and weight gaining of infants. The primary research published between 2013 and 2018 were compressively searched using a systematic guideline that developed by the Joaana Briggs Institute (2017). This systematic search identified a total of 8 studies which met the review inclusion criteria and included 3 randomized controlled trials and 5 quasi-experimental studies. Meta-analysis could not apply as these studies were dissimilar in terms of types of intervention and their outcomes. Instead, narrative summarization was used in this systematic review.

The finding of the study expressed that the two main aspects of supporting of lactation maintaining among mother of preterm infants: 1) Psychological aspect including decrease maternal stress by giving the information of the infant’s care, counselling, music therapy and education provision. 2) Physiological aspect including stimulation milk supply by massage and compressing breast, manual milk expression or pumping of breast milk.

The findings in this systematic review suggest that Nurse Midwives is the significant person in the selection and application of the appropriate method for encouraging and maintaining milk production for mother of preterm infants. The combine of methods affects the positive result than one method. Additionally, primary research should be conducted for meta-analysis, which confirmed the effectiveness of supporting of lactation maintaining among mother of a preterm infant.
