Abstract

The most important goal for persons with diabetes mellitus is to be able to control their blood sugar level. The persons with diabetes mellitus should pay attention to their diet, exercise, take medication and manage their stress, as these could help in controlling blood sugar levels. However, persons with type 2 diabetes were found to be unable to control their diet and were inconsistent with their life style. Therefore, a model to promote health behavior in controlling the diet for people with type 2 diabetes should be developed. This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effect of applying information, motivation, and behavior skills model regarding dietary control of blood sugar level among persons with type 2 diabetes who had attended Donkaew Community Hospital, Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai province from February to June 2016. Thirty-five subjects were assigned to the control group (n = 17) and experimental group (n = 18). The experimental group received and applied information, motivation, and behavior skills model regarding dietary control, while the control group received the usual nursing care. The research instruments consisted of: 1) The Applying Information, Motivation, and Behavior Skills Model Regarding Dietary Control which was developed by a researcher based on Fisher, Fisher, & Harman (2003), information, motivation and behavior skills concept, 2) The Questionnaire Regarding Exercise and Medication Taking Behavior among Persons with Diabetes Mellitus and 3) glucometer. The Psychometric Property of research instrument was approved prior to collecting data. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Friedman test and Mann-Whitney U test.

The results revealed that:

  1. After receiving an applying the information, motivation, and behavior skills model regarding dietary control, the blood sugar levels of subjects in the experimental group at 6th, and 10th week were statistically significant lower than that of before (p<.001).
  2. After receiving an applying information, motivation, and behavior skills model regarding dietary control at 6th, and 10th week, the blood sugar level of the subjects in the experimental group were statistically significantly lower than the control group who received the usual nursing care (p<.01).

The results of this study demonstrated that the applying information, motivation and behavior skills model regarding dietary control can help persons with type 2 diabetes control their diet and decrease their blood sugar level. Thus, the integration of the program into the usual care for persons with diabetes mellitus type 2 in order to control blood sugar level should be implemented. For further study, the extension of the period for testing sustainability of this program as well as assessing hemoglobin A1C is recommended.
