Abstract

Multimedia is an educational technology that support students to learn by themselves.
The objectives of this research were: (1) to develop the pediatric medication administration [PMA] multimedia resources for nursing students, and (2) to evaluate the efficacy of this PMA multimedia resource.  A purposive sample included 47 senior year nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University.  A focus group of 12 students was held to identify their needs in a medication administration multimedia resource. The resulting PMA multimedia resource was then pilot tested with 35 students to test quality.  The research instrument consisted of the PMA Multimedia Developmental Plan, the Recording Form, the PMA Knowledge Questionnaire, the PMA Multimedia Materials Opinion Questionnaire and the focus group interview guide.  Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and
t-test. The 80 / 80 standard based on the E1:E2 formula was used to determine the efficacy.

The results of this study revealed that the efficacy of PMA Multimedia materials were
89.15 / 81.33 higher than the 80 / 80 standard.  Post-test learning scores were higher than pretest
(t = 12.09, p < .001) and most students indicated that their overall satisfaction with the multimedia materials was at the high or highest level (46.7% and 50.0% respectively).

The findings of this study suggest that multimedia materials regarding pediatric medication administration can be used as an educational tool for self-learning. This tool was shown to be effective in promoting knowledge in nursing students and can be applied in pediatric nursing practice.
