Abstract

Caring for cancer patients affects the physical, psychological, social and economic of caregivers, leading to a perceived burden. Therefore, relieving the burden of a caregiver is important. This systematic review aimed to summarize the interventions and outcomes in relieving the burden among caregivers of cancer patients. The search strategy aimed to find published and unpublished randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies either in Thai or English regarding relieving burden interventions of caregivers of cancer patients which were reported between 1995 and 2015. The systematic review was conducted using a systematic guideline developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI, 2014). All identified studies were independently appraised and extracted by the researcher and major advisor using standardized tools developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The systematic search identified a total of eleven studies met the inclusion criteria and the critical appraisal criteria. Narrative summarization was used to identify the relieving burden interventions and their effectiveness.

The relieving burden interventions among cancer patients’ caregivers could be classified into three categories including 1) educational support 2) emotionally focused therapy and 3) massage therapy and healing touch, which were held in a hospital or with telephone follow up and home visits. For the results, the educational support intervention was effective in relieving caregivers’ burden, however, emotionally focused therapy and massage therapy and healing touch were found in one single study that could not identify their effectiveness on the caregivers’ burden.

This systematic review recommends that health personnel can relieve the burden of caregivers by providing skill training as well as educational support. However, additional experimental research and replicating of primary research is needed. This will confirm the effects of each intervention in relieving burden among caregivers of cancer patients and the data will be adequate for meta-analysis.
